Barrington Hills Road News and Information
Village Roads Spring Limits Start March 14
The office of the Village Engineer has completed a review of the extended forecast of overnight temperatures above freezing and believes that the upcoming thaw will lead to the rapid loss in frost under the pavement. This condition leaves Village roads susceptible to damage by vehicles of the regularly permitted weight class.
Beginning on Monday March 14th, the gross weight of Village roads will be limit to vehicles less than 10 tons. All overweight permits will be suspended and no new ones issued by the Village. The length of closure will be determined by the rate at which the moisture leaves the sub-grade.

Spring 2011 Program

In 2010, two new programs were successfully introduced. The first was an addition to the Village’s schedule for drainage improvements, that of regular maintenance for the culvert systems. After Gewalt Hamilton’s completion of an inventory of the 200+ cross-culverts in the Village, Cuba Township performed a flushing service to clear pipes needing attention. At the same time culverts identified as requiring replacement were addressed. The second was an initiative to facilitate communication between the various private road maintenance coordinators on the 24.5 miles of private roads in the Village. A series of informational meetings was held monthly in 2010 to reach out to all of the residents on our private roads. Residents who participated in the program reported that they found it to be very useful. In March 2011, the first meeting for all of the private road coordinators who have identified themselves will be held.
Buckley Road, Aberdeen Drive, Barrington Hills Road, Butternut Road, Crabapple Road and Leeds Drive will be resurfaced in 2011. In addition to the resurfacing program, the Village undertakes at least one large-scale drainage improvement project a year. For this year, Church Road and Chapel Road drainage improvements are scheduled. In 2012, drainage improvements for Spring Creek Road and Caesar Drive are slated; with drainage improvements to Lakeview Lane to be addressed in 2013. Please note that the ability of the Village to carry out and complete these large-scale projects depends not only upon budgetary considerations and approvals from the various regional permitting authorities but also upon obtaining appropriate authorization to perform the work from all of the homeowners in locations where the Village does not have dedicated easements. In the event that homeowner authorization cannot be obtained, proposed drainage improvements slated cannot proceed.
Spring will eventually come. When it does, please remember clear your drainage ditches clear of fallen limbs and debris so that our storm water management system can function at its optimum capacity.

Culvert Cleaning 2010
Village of Barrington Hills program is in the final planning stage. The Roads and Bridges Committee has provided a form for your use to obtain positive and negative feedback. In order that your comments can be efficiently addressed, please download and fill the form out as completely as possible and submit to the Village Clerk clerk@barringtonhills-il.gov or regular mail. It would be helpful if you could attach photos. The Village addresses drainage along Village maintained roads, not along private roads. Each year work is generally done in late fall, unless it is done as part of resurfacing project. New projects are added to the Village work list as necessary, and are handled in order of severity, as the budget allows. Tentatively, the Village funded 2010 Road Program is scheduled to include Hawley Woods Road, Round Barn Road, and Old Dundee Road. The actual scope of the program can change based on the severity of the winter and its effects on various roadways.

Old Sutton Road Becomes First Heritage Corridor
Winter 2011 News
The Barrington Area Conservation Trust (BACT) recently completed the area’s first Heritage Corridor, protecting one of the scenic roads in Barrington Hills that contributes to the unspoiled beauty of the local countryside. The corridor is located on Old Sutton Road from County Line Road south to Donlea Road. Landowners Jim and Susan Kennedy, and Stephen and Mary Smith placed easements on their property along the roadway to permanently safeguard the character of the road. The easements are jointly held by BACT and the Village of Barrington Hills.
A sign identifying the Heritage Corridor designation has been placed at the southern entrance to Old Sutton Road at County Line Road. For more information on the program, call (847) 381-4291.
