Bicycle Patrol Unit Established
On July 31, 2010, Officers Parada and Johnson of the newly established bicycle patrol unit hit the streets for the first time. The officers concentrated their patrol time on streets located in the northern portion of the Village, where the Department receives an overwhelming majority of bicycle-related complaints, from both motorists and cyclists.
Although officers participating in the Unit have full discretion to take enforcement action when and where necessary, the primary goal of the Unit is education. Putting officers on bicycles provides them with a perspective unattainable in a conventional patrol unit and allows them to communicate with cyclists on a common level.
