H1N1 Vaccination Clinics for pre-K-8
Students set for January 11, 2010
On Monday, January 11, Cook County Department of Public Health will facilitate free vaccination clinics for children in grades pre-K thru 8th grade. Every child whose parent or guardian completes the necessary forms can receive the optional vaccination. Cook County is not yet able to make the vaccination available to high school students in grades 9-12 for these clinics.
For complete information on the student-only, school-based vaccination clinics, please visit Barrington220.org to review, print and sign the necessary forms before submitting them to the school your child attends by Jan. 8, per instructions from the school.
At the elementary schools only, younger siblings who are not yet school-age may also be eligible to receive the vaccination on January 11, depending on availability. For students who received the vaccine during previous clinics or from other health sources, the January 11 vaccination would satisfy the recommended second vaccination.

Now for some good news:
Newsweek again ranks Barrington High among best in U.S.
. . .
Barrington High School is once again among the elite 2009 list of America’s top 1,500 high schools according to the current edition of Newsweek Magazine. The Newsweek list places Barrington High School in the top 6 percent of all high schools throughout the United States. At number 675 in the national ranking, Barrington is the 14th highest rated school in Illinois. Only 47 of 782 Illinois schools made the roll.
This is the sixth year in the last seven that Barrington High School has made the Newsweek list, which is based on the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and/or Cambridge tests taken by all students at a school in 2008 divided by the number of graduating seniors.
This distinction follows Barrington High School recently earning a prestigious 2009 Silver Award from U.S. News and World Report magazine, which recognized only 37 of 782 public high schools in Illinois as among the best in the nation.
“We are very proud of our students and the many ways they succeed compared to other schools nationwide,” said Barrington High School Principal Steve McWilliams. “This level of recognition underscores the positive academic culture and supportive community from which we all benefit.”

Swine flu prompts Barrington 220 to proactively remind parents and staff of health precautions
. . .
Dear Community:
As you may already know, an outbreak of swine flu has caused the U.S. to issue a public health emergency as a precautionary measure. Although there are no known cases in our community or in the State of Illinois, we are doing everything possible to protect the health of our students and staff and to limit the potential spread of this illness.
School nurses are staying informed and monitoring the situation every day. In addition, our various staff have received guidelines to help them be even more vigilant in preventing the spread of germs. For your benefit, attached are details about swine flu prepared by Barrington 220 Nursing Supervisor, Eva Detloff. This comprehensive overview from Eva provides useful health tips and links to reputable Websites with the latest updates on swine flu.
Let me assure you, the health and well-being of students and staff is our top priority in Barrington 220. We will do everything possible to address the situation and to be prepared should the spread of swine flu escalate into Illinois. With your assistance, we can avoid this possibility in our schools by working together to keep students and staff healthy. Please refer to the attached document and feel free to contact Eva Detloff or your school nurse if you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Tom Leonard

On April 2 - 5, a 100-hour, round-the-clock, round-the-globe outreach marathon will include live webcasts from research observatories, public observing events, and other activities. The goal is to encourage as many people as possible to look through a telescope for the first time.
" These events are NOT just for scouts! This is a great opportunity for you [Scouting Parents] and your children. Attending one or more of these events may help your scout earn a patch, complete a requirement or an elective, or even earn an Astronomy Belt Loop or Astronomy Pin, depending upon your scout level! Check your books for any requirements these events might satisfy should you choose to attend."

6. Learn about careers related to astronomy. What school subjects will help you get a job in astronomy?
7. Visit a planetarium or a local astronomy club. Give a report on what you learned to your den.
8. Learn about some of the early space missions. Tell your den or family about them.
