February 8 - the 100th birthday of Scouting in America
Countryside School hosted the 2010 Northwest Council Cub Scout Pack 187 Pinewood Derby competition January 30, 2010. Scouts prepared their cars according to strict specifications for the event.

Families and Troop leadership members were on hand to cheer for the participants from Pack 187’s Wolf, Bear, Weblos I and Weblos II Troops. Merit badges and participant trophies were awarded to each scout and the top three winners in each racing event. An overall race was held with the top cars from each the troop, and large first and second place trophies were awarded. Design winners were given trophies for the top two overall best looking cars. All of the first and second place cars for the race in each troop and the top two design winners in each troop will go forward to District competition.

Troop leaders, parents, friends and families enjoy the event.

The event is managed by Scouting leaders, parents who weigh in each car; assign a blind numbering scheme and prepare the track and computer system so each car gets a chance to compete on each of the four different tracks against all competitors in the troop.

Cars are loaded on the track by the parental assistants and leaders, ready, set, go!

A highlight of the event is the interview process with each competitor, microphone in place, telling their parents, troop leaders and families the favorite part of the preparation. Hands down, painting is the most favored activity. Parental advice and family enthusiasm is evident when you see them cheer for their favorites. The sleekest of the models ran over 208 mph.

Cars are running at speeds over 208 mph in some cases...so fast the photographer missed them!

Pinewood Derby participants love this event as much as any other of the scouting traditions. Photos below are but a few taken at the event. More photos and captions are welcome.

Cheers and shouts as the cars continue to whiz by.
